Ear Training: Finding the Pulse

Engage
This short ear training lesson will allow students to both practice finding the steady beat in a musical example and compare it to similar beats. Students will be given several short music clips and asked to find the pulse, either seated or through optional kinesthetic movement around the classroom. They will then compare the pulse to two audio beat samples and decide which sample aligns the closest to the pulse of the music clip. By the end of this lesson, students will have a better understanding of finding the pulse in music, how some pulses can be broken down into faster beats (subdivided) and have a stronger grasp on kinesthetically keeping a steady beat through tapping or movement in slow and fast tempos.
