Introduction
This is a comprehensive introduction to the canon form in music with the aid of a worksheet. Students will connect existing knowledge of echoes and repetition to imitation in canons. Students will then identify the distinguishing features of a canon via aurally differentiating between canon and non-canon and define the terms leader and follower. Students will perform a simple canon to apply the concept of leader and follower in practice. Finally, students analyze "Sumer Is Icumen In", a Medieval English Canon, as an exit ticket. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify a canon and be ready to apply the leader and follower concepts in the future.
